Shaya and the 7th grade AIA team played this weekend in the 11U/12U Battle on the Hardwood tourney in Woodbury, MN. They had a rough start - winning, but against a team they should have probably beat by about 50 (they won 54-28). Their second game, they played well and won 55-36. In the evening, they played up a bracket (a pick-up game, because one team did not show up), and won that game by a nice margin. Shaya hit a nice 3-pointer and a great jump shot from the free-throw line in this game, as well as some other good buckets and rebounds. Overall - day one was pretty good.
The championship game was played on Sunday morning at 8:00 am against the AIA 11U (6th grade team). These teams practice with each other most of the time - and are often coached by the same person. The game got off to a good start - with one of Shaya's guards having a very hot hand (3 - 3-pointers within about 5 or 6 possessions). Shaya made a great reverse lay-up and our defense was working pretty hard. But the 6th graders were very determined. The game was very competitive, and in the end, their guards were simply better than ours. We fought to the last second, but ended up losing by 2. This loss is somewhat ironic - as a couple tournaments ago - the 7th graders beat the 8th graders playing up in that bracket in a Missouri tourney. The girls were very disappointed, but they handled it well, and congratulated the younger girls on their victory. Practice should be interesting on Thursday...
Up next - both Kionna and Shaya will participate in the ISU Elite Camp this weekend. After that, we go back to MN for the AAU Summer Jam in Bloomington.
