Kionna returned late last night (Sunday, June 22) from K-State's Elite Camp. She said it was a great camp, she met some pretty amazing players, and made some new connections. She also enjoyed the team a lot. This was a little different experience from the ISU Elite Camp in that she stayed in the residence halls with teammates and players, so she had a little view into what college life could be like as a student athlete (without the academics, at this point - so of course, much more enjoyable!)
Shaya and the AIA 12U team played in the Adidas Midwest Girls Classic in Ames. They went 4-5, losing in the championship game by 1 point to the NE Cornhuskers. This is a team that they have never won against. In the past couple years, the Cornhuskers have beaten the girls by many points; this might be the closest contest yet. When we finally win against them, it will be quite an accomplishment for the girls. I am going to go out on a limb and say this will happen next season (barring any injuries or player losses by the AIA team). We have steadily improved, and can now fairly consistently beat their press, and if we had not had 20 turnovers and made just a few more of the 20-some shots we missed, the team could have won by a significant margin. We will need to improve our confidence and our composure, but it was a great effort by the whole team all weekend.
We leave for Sioux Falls on Wed night (for the Ms. Basketball Dakota Showcase from Thursday to Saturday). And then the girls get ready for Nationals (Shaya) and Portland (Kionna).
