In her inside / outside role, Shaya was able to have many more opportunities from outside the arc. She ended her season with 44 3-pointers (9th in class 5A), with a 3FG percentage of 42.2 (47% total FG%). Through the first 9 games, she was 5/25 (20%), and through the rest of the season, 39/79 (49.4%). The team broke the school record for 3's made in a game (17 on Feb 8, 2012), was 2nd in the 5A class for 3's made (164), and 7th in 5A in 3FG % (at 35.7%).
The season did turn around, and following their loss to DM East on January 15, the Little Cyclones won 9 of 10 games, with their loss to Waukee coming in overtime. They avenged an earlier season loss in beating West DM Valley in the Regional Semi-Final game. In their final game against SE Polk (went on to win the state championship), who the Little Cyclones had beat earlier in the season, they fought until the end. Shaya had 18 points in the loss. She expressed her gratitude for her teammates, and a great senior year.
Following the championship game last night, Shaya was one of 5 players named to the DM Register Girls 5A State Basketball First Team, which was one of many goals from this season.She was a consensus All-State First Team pick this year, chosen also by the Iowa Newspaper Association (INA) and the Iowa Girls Coaches Association (IGCA).
