Friday: Thrill of VICTORY...

Wow! What a whirlwind this has been - and I am just a player's parent! I cannot imagine the range of emotions the girls have been through in such a short time. After beating Ankeny in the first round of the Iowa State Girls Basketball Tournament, the Ames Little Cyclones went on to play on Friday afternoon in the semi-finals. Their opponent? None other than the Linn-Mar Lions, the number one ranked team in the state, and the only undefeated team. They have Jaime Printy, an amazing point guard who will play at the University of Iowa next year, and Kiah Stokes, a 6'3" post who is the block leader (by a margin of around 50) for the state.

The game was tough as usual - I don't think the girls have played an "easy" game this season. They have worked so hard for everything they have earned. The game vs. Linn-Mar was no exception. We trailed throughout the game, never letting them gain too much of a lead. And we battled back in the 4th quarter, which ended with a Trisha Nesbitt layup with 2 seconds left on the clock to tie the game and send it in to overtime. We scored right away (Chey - the freshman - hit a hug 3-pointer and two freethrows) and they fouled, sending Kionna to the line twice, where she hit all four freethrows. They scored once (a layup by Stokes) - and we won the game. This was a huge upset, and put Ames in the championship game for the first time ever.
