After beating the #1 team in the state in the semis, Ames went on to face the Sioux City North Stars in the state championship game on Saturday night. Exactly one month prior, Ames played this team and lost by 20. We were determined not to let this happen again. It did not look good, as Sioux City opened up in the first quarter and a half with a 20-7 lead. But the girls went on an 8-0 run, and were down only 5 at the half. Maura Owings was HUGE in the first half for us.
Ames came out after half-time battling. Coach had them spread the floor, and Trisha was able to hit some key buckets. Kionna scored most of her 10 points in the second half as well. The game ended up coming down to the freethrow line. We were ahead by 3 with a few chances to put it away for good at the freethrow line, and could not hit them. We shot 7-20 at the line. In the end, we had to foul, and they made most of their freethrows. Kionna and Trisha were named to the all-tournament team, along with Jade Rogers, Kiah Stokes, Brittany Donaldson, and captain, Jalyssa Ceasar. Kionna averaged 10 points, 10 rebounds and 3.7 blocks per game at the state tourney.
The Litte Cyclones ended their season 23-3, 2009 Iowa State Runner-ups, and accomplished so much as a team. They were truly amazing over and over again this season, and will have some great memories.
